Cape Cod, 1764 — A Dozen Years Before Independence

“The very act of taxing, exercised over those who are not represented, appears to me to be depriving them of one of their most essential rights.”

— James Otis Jr., of West Barnstable · The Rights of the British Colonies Asserted and Proved, 1764

Otis — born just up the Cape in West Barnstable — gave the Revolution its founding argument. Harwich answered the call: in April 1775 the town voted to arm its citizens, and some 450 Harwich men served in the fight for American independence.
